Tips on Effectively Gift Shopping for Others

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Sometimes gift shopping for others can be not only a challenge, but incredibly stressful. There is the entire dilemma of how much money you should be spending, what kind of gift is appropriate and what can you get them that they probably don’t already have? I spent entirely too much time going through all of those questions for years. Finally, I walked into a store one day and saw tons of gift baskets on the shelves. Each gift basket had something special and unique inside of it. As I walked down that aisle, looking into each and every gift basket, I knew that this could be the perfect way to shop for others. I had two people on my list, one male and one female, and walked out with a gift basket for both of them. Each basket had things that were catered to their individual tastes and styles and would be appropriate. Plus, it was an extra bonus that they fit into my price range perfectly.

When you give a gift basket, you can make it personalized. Sure, there are fruit baskets and lots of gift baskets that have food inside of them. They aren’t very personal. Of course, they are appreciated and delicious, but nothing out of the ordinary. I don’t like to be ordinary.

After visiting that same store two more times, I began to realize that I could make my own gift basket for whomever I needed a gift for. I could easily find some wonderful baskets and fill them with things that I would shop for individually. It would be simple and easy to pick out bottles of wine and some candles, candies and some more personalized items. I made my father a golf gift basket for Father’s Day one year. I purchased some golf balls and tees to layer the bottom of the basket. I put a water bottle and a golf towel in as well. Then, I went to his favorite golf course and bought him 5 rounds of golf. I scattered a few loose items inside of it as well. He loved it.

You can make a gift basket for just about anyone. It doesn’t even have to be a basket. It can be a bucket if the recipient is leaving for a beach vacation. It can be a box or a bag, whatever you deem appropriate. If you like to buy gift cards for others, they easily fit inside of the basket. Be creative and have some fun with it. The person you hand it to will love your creativity and the thought that you put into it.

Paper or Plastic? How about Neither!

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Have you ever tried to imagine the number of paper and plastic bags we use? The massive numbers are hard to wrap your head around, as are the negative environmental impact that each one of those disposable bags has. The most amazing part of it all is that we can easily avoid using disposable bags and the associated environmental troubles by switching to reusable grocery bags. Think paper and plastic bags aren’t so bad? Think again…

Plastic

We consume over 500 billion bags every year. Most of these bags end up in the trash. Attempts to recycle the bags are fruitless as the cost to recycle them greater than the commodity sale of the recycled plastic by 99.99%. Loose bags jam up recycling machines which leads to even more cost.

Worst of all, over 240 species of marine life are in some way, shape or form harmed by plastic bags that wind up in our planet’s oceans. The bags strangle some animals and kill others such as sea turtles and whales that accidentally eat the bags. Not only that, but the whole marine ecosystem is at risk as more and more plastic fragments begin to outnumber plankton 6:1.

Paper

Paper bags are no better. In 1999, over 14 million trees were harvested to supply us with enough paper bags. 14 million trees is a lot! A lot of trees that could be used to absorb greenhouse gasses or make products that get more than one use.

Paper bags are also much less energy efficient than plastic bags. They require 4 times the amount of energy to produce that plastic bags require, which is partly why plastic bags became so popular years ago. Further, paper bags require 91% more energy to recycle and paper mills are notorious for using toxic chemicals during manufacture that can pollute our air and water.

The answer?

reusable grocery bags can be used over and over again. They are inexpensive, practical and efficient. You can fit a lot more groceries and household goods in each bag making it easier to unload the car when you return home.

Reusable bags are also more resistant to rips or tears and some are available in a rip stop material that will not “burst” even if a small cut is in the bag. This means less damage to your purchased goods.

Switching to reusable bags is easy. The overall impact on the environment is better, and they’re easier to use than disposable bags. It’s a win/win/win situation for everyone, so if you haven’t already, make the switch today.

It works great as long as you are at the top of that pyramid. If not, then you might as well not bother. I am so on the egde on MLM. Alot of them will make you pay not for the service, but for the product.
