A Short History on the Design and Structure of Recycling Bins
Wednesday, April 18th, 2012Waste bins are first designed to be round metal canisters that are usually heavy and quite hard to handle. The body of the canisters have handles as well as their lids. The design of the first waste bins are not very easy to manage because besides from their hard bodies, garbage men would have to pull them out into the driveway and hoist their heavy weight on their shoulder just to throw their contents into the garbage truck. It is not difficult to see that these bins are very different from the recycling bins which are very safe to use and reliable in terms of waste disposal as well .
The next design, on the other hand, was made of durable plastic . The changing of the material used, unfortunately, still made the bin very hard to manage despite of having two handles. Another issue with them is that they are incapable of handling hot wastes because their plastic interior melts . This dilemma gave birth to the need of creating new trash containers that are durable yet still easy to handle. This started the development of the new recycling bins.
The wheelie bin is one garbage container that provided an alternative to the previous designs for waste disposal. It is designed to have a handle at its back and wheels below so it can be pushed instead carried by the user instead. Another reason for the creation of this container is the spilling of medical and hazardous trash before that infected the waste containers before. Due to this issue, the need to separate these kinds of waste in separate recycling bins was born. Separating the trash and throwing them properly by wheeling the recycling bin was the only solution to the problem.
Wheelie bins come in the form of rectangular plastic boxes that are around four feet in height with two wheels at the bottom and a hinged lid. They are designed to come in different colors depending of the type of trash that they can accommodate for proper waste segregation. These colors are designated according to the type of waste such as hazardous and sensitive trash, plastic, and other waste materials.
With the separation of the kinds of wastes together with the increasing consciousness regarding the need for responsible waste management, the era of recycling bins began. Legislative enactments together with these factors turned the recycling bin as the symbol for waste management. There are many who think that recycling bins are merely simple containers when in fact they are very important tool of waste disposal and hold different kinds of waste products. Once the thrash are collected from their respective waste bins, they will be processed according to their type.
At present, a new trend recycling bins is to camouflage them in accordance to their surroundings. There is a movement at present that campaigns in making these items as aesthetically pleasing as possible. The simplest way is to have their bodies have the same color or design as the wallpaper behind them. The problem of identifying the type of trash which can be thrown into the bin is solved by putting prominent identifying markers on them.
